HISTORY
At the beginning of the 20th century, the English company C. Hay Walker and CO. Ltd. obtained the
concession for the construction of the expansion of the port of Buenos Aires.
The need for raw materials such as stone and sand in abundance led them to the shores of the
town of Conchillas in the department of Colonia of the ORIENTAL REPUBLIC OF URUGUAY,
crossing the Rio de la Plata 40 km far from Buenos Aires.
Once the supply area was determined, the company proceeded with the construction of the
building and industrial facilities to receive a large amount of labor, mostly of European origin.
These facilities consisted of longitudinal barracks with stone walls and zinc sheet roofs, housing
which is currently preserved and integrated into the characteristic building configuration of the
town of Conchillas, declared in 1976 as a NATIONAL HISTORIC MONUMENT.
Together with these houses, a railway line was built to transport the material to its loading point at
the PUERTO INGLES, and the HOTEL EVANS was also built to accommodate its hierarchical staff,
mainly made up of English workers, inaugurated in 1911.
HOTEL EVANS
Typical English building from the 19th century, in a `U` shape, with a built area of 2000 square
meters on two floors with an open central courtyard, a water well, terraces, and perimeter gardens.
Built with generous stone walls, zinc sheet roofs with gabled ceilings and pine wood floors and
tiles, original materials imported from England that are still in good general condition today.
It has 38 spacious (approx. 6 x 5 ) square meters, rooms with fireplaces, dining room, and shared
bathrooms, living room, kitchens, and utility facilities.
It also has a plot of land of 3.5 hectares populated with native trees, ñandubay, espinillos,
coronillas, etc.
Three-phase electricity and water services are available.
