Evercreech House forms the major part (5000 .) of a large country house built in the 18th century for William Rodbard, Sheriff of Somerset. There are many noteworthy details throughout the property including a grand galleried reception hall with magnificent carved woodwork, columns, balustrades and chimney piece. These features were the result of remodelling in the mid 19th century by Sir T. G. Jackson, the architect responsible for much of the Victorian building of Oxford.
The house now stands with impressive elevations, typical of the Georgian period. Such is its prominence, it was noted in renowned historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner’s ‘The Buildings of England’ where the distinctive garden facade with its three canted bays, each with a Venetian window, is described. In addition there are sash windows, working shutters, high ornate ceilings, dado rails and cornicing to name just a few period features.
