Good morning!
This is a small rural property, located in the parish of Castro Laboreiro, Melgaço, in the Portuguese
province of Minho, which borders Galicia, on a small plateau, at one of the highest points of the Penêda-
Gerês National Park.
This property consists of a house with no roof, only walls (a ruin) and a plot of land with oak trees. It is
located in a very beautiful, private area, in one of those old abandoned villages (which still has the
community bread oven).
It has no water supply or sanitation system. There is a water fountain at the entrance to the small village
that is supplied by a relatively nearby spring further up in the hills, from which you could possibly pipe
water to the house. As for sanitation, there is only the possibility of making your own cesspit (or using
more modern tanks to separate dirty organic water from chemical/wash water) on the adjacent land.
There is electricity, but you have to ask for it to be connected. In short, these are the Disadvantages of
living in such a place.
The Advantages, for those who have the Spirit, are the purity of Nature, WITHIN the Park, without
unnatural and disharmonious elements (such as that plague of giant fans that supposedly provide
`green` energy...). the privacy, the natural silence full of marvellous sounds and animals that only live
there, the scents of the mountains, inviolate at those altitudes. It is close (3 minutes) to Castro Laboreiro,
which has cafés, 1 or 2 mini-markets, restaurants, a town/village that is much visited in warmer weather,
but which nevertheless retains a traditional atmosphere. It`s also close to Galicia (about 10 minutes from
the house), where you can also buy groceries, gas and diesel/petrol, which are much cheaper, especially
Gaz.
In conclusion, you`ll have to be a very special person(s) to like and want to live in a special place like this,
and have the willpower to provide the water needed for the house (you`ll probably have to apply for
licences at Melgaço Town Hall...) as I wanted to do when I bought it in 2009, but I never had the money to
fix it up with the necessary comfort to live in an area that is very beautiful and hot, especially in summer,
but extremely cold and rainy in autumn and winter. On the plot you can build outbuildings for different
purposes that your imagination and needs will put into practice.
Ps.: Bedrooms... I supose that After reinforcing and insulating the walls, building a strong floor in treated
wood and and closed/insulated the House with a Good, Strong and also Insulated Roof, you can make 2
bedrooms and a small bathroom in the upper floor, and on the ground floor, build your kitchen with
fireplace, the entire living room in the traditional Minho style. Connected to the kitchen, outside you can
also build a beautiful porch. Well, that`s what I would do for myself if I had the necessary financial means,
but unfortunately my economic situation doesn`t allow it. So I had to decide to sell the place.
