The Quinta Beira de Lago (Lagos, Algarve, Portugal) sits on the southern edge of the Barragem de Bravura - Wild Lake - 20 minutes from Lagos in the western Algarve. The house is set in a eucalyptus forest of about 11 Ha, with a beautiful view up the lake to the Dogspine Hills and Monchique mountain, some 3000 feet high. The prevailing north westerly wind keeps things cool in the summer, and high ground protects the property from westerly weather during the short winter.

The house runs on a rotating solar array, so there are no electricity bills - we try to be as eco friendly as possible. But we are perfectly prepared to discount the price of a full electrical installation by the EDP, as well as other things which a buyer might want such as a pool. We swim in the lake because it`s super warm compared to the sea and there`s no maintenance!

The property consists of the main house with three en-suite bedrooms, (the biggest measures about 64 square metres) a detached cottage with 2 double bedrooms and three rentable en-suite apartments which also face out over the lake. There are plenty of pictures on algarvelakeside. net.

A total embargo on building has been in force now for 20 years so there are only three other houses on the lakeside, and only one is visible in the distance. This is a beautiful area for walking, and during the lockdown, we really weren`t affected at all except when we had to go shopping and wear a mask.

Smaller roads lead up onto the Dogspine hills and down to the west coast at Aljesur. Here, the protected waters of the southern Algarve are gone, and the rugged coastline of the Costa Vincentina is glorious for it`s hidden beaches, great areas of dunes, plethora of wild birds and great seascapes when there`s bad weather around in the winter.

All in all this is a home, which, built in the late eighties, has stood the test of time. Wide cavity walls are filled with cork from floor to ceiling, and the ceilings are made from traditional eucalyptus and cane. Canal tiles with a considerable overhang cover the roof. The floors are of handmade tiles which are no longer available but which can be seen in many an old building or village restaurant.

Like a house in Kenya, it retains the cool of the night in the day.
