Solar Setecentista CASA DE REAL - 1758 (Order - Lousada)

Solar located in the city of the Order, Lousada, built by D. José Freire da
By his uncle, D. Frei Manuel da Cruz, bishop of Maranhão and Mariana, born in that
parish in 1690 and baptized with the name of Manuel Ferreira Freire da Cruz.

In 1708 it took the habit of the monks of Saint Bernard in the Real Abbey of Santa Maria de Alcobaça
(Monastery of Alcobaça), and later graduated from the University of Coimbra, where he lived and
exercised his ministry and where from 1732 he would take the place of Abbot of the College of the Holy Spirit.

D. Joao V, having the certainty of his modesty and science, appointed D. Frei Manuel da Cruz in 1738 to
the first Bishop of the State of Maranhão (Brazil was at that time divided into two independent states,
Maranhão and Brazil). In S.Luis do Maranhão, where he took office in 1739, he founded a Seminar and another
later founded in Mariana. He died on January 3, 1764, laying his remains on the
Chapel-Mor of the Cathedral of Mariana.

The Royal House passed to his grandchildren nephews and remained in the family until today.

The house is built in box, with a central patio characteristic of the Cistercian architecture.
From this patio you can access the noble zone, upstairs, and all divisions of the ground floor,
of which the kitchen and the chapel stand out due to their size and importance. Inside the chapel,
dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy, highlighting: altarpiece, simple, embodying the spirit of the Order of
Cister; ceiling, with decorative painting, identifying in its central medallion the symbols of the
Bishop; and area for the choir, which is accessed by the upper floor. Other divisions of the r / c: cellar and wine press,
lounge, 4 bedrooms and bathroom.

From the exterior is immediately noticeable, on the facade, facing the west, the preponderance of the chapel,
still in perfect harmony with the other elements of the architectural complex that make it up:
central staircase, through which access to the first floor, the access door to the interior patio, and the
windows on the first floor. The first floor consists of 2 halls, a large dining room
processes internal circulation, facing the inner courtyard, 4 large bedrooms, 1 library,
1 kitchen, and 2 bathrooms, having all divisions natural light.

These 2 floors, the ground floor and the first floor, have a construction area of about 800 m2. The house also has
a storage area on the 1st floor with a total area of 150 m2. In zone
adjacent, there is also a 2-storey house for the housekeepers, with a covered area of about 100 m2, and
a garage with space for 2 cars. The surrounding land - a front yard of about 700
m2, where the pool is located, and a farm with about 7000 m2- is fully walled and fenced.
There is also a large tank, which receives water directly from a mine that is owned by the House
in 50%, and that satisfies all the needs (consumption, watering and swimming pool).

According to recent topographic survey, the construction area is 1064.75 m2, between basement (3
shops), r / floor and floor.
