A few words about Koroni
Koroni is a coastal town in Messinia county Peloponnese. Located 52 klm southwest of Kalamata occupied by 1668 residents, according to the population count that took place in 2001.
Koroni is well known for its venetian castle dominating at the top of the town.
Its inexhaustible natural beauty, the quaintness of the landscape, the historical sights and the warm hospitality of the people charm every visitor.
Short walks will help you explore the mysterious medieval town, caressed by the glamor of the beautiful sea. All eyes are captured by the landscape contrasts. The venetian castle, dominating at the top of a hill, the cobbled roads, the storey mansions and the countless churches add a medieval character to the town.

HISTORY
Koroni is a name that came from the copper coin `kourouna`, which was found during the excavation for the town walls.
It is mentioned that `koronia` was the first name given to the town but due to the local peoples difficulty in the everyday use of `koronia`, it has been changed to `Koroni`.
The area has been inhabited since ancient times and that is confirmed by signs, shells and vessels.
From 13th to 17th century, Koroni met some very prosperous times and together with Methoni, constituted key port for commerce from and to the East.
During 19th century economic blooming continued, consequently making Koroni a center of trade ,commerce and small industry.
SIGHTS
At first glance, visitors face the venetian castle and the town port that outspreads at the foot of the village.

Koroni castle, dated the 6th -7th century A.D., is a sample of its Venetian fortress architecture.

It falls in the category of castles that inside them are houses and temples saved and maintained. The church of St. Sophia and St. Charalambos are considered remarkable.
Inside the caste you can find St. Johns monastery, next to byzantine church ruins. The monastery was built in 1918.
Under the castle, surrounded by palm trees lies the church of Panagia Eleistria (Merciful Mary)from which you have a wonderful view of Koroni`s sandy beach. Panagia Eleistria is the patron Saint of the town.
Entering Koroni, you will see chieftains Karapavlos mansion, while arriving at the traditional central square Metropolitan Temple of saint Demetrios is dominating. The temple is royal style ,Ionian art and was built in 1864.

EVENTS
Every summer various events take place, such as theatrical plays, sardine festival, varkarola (ride in boats) and athletic celebrations.
Koroni `s carnival, which has an impressive chariot and walking parade.
Easter time, is also very special in Koroni. The whole town is overwhelmed by the religious clima. In God Friday Jesus`s epitaph is rambled in all small and larger roads of the town and ends up at the castle.
Festive celebrations take place during the celebration of Theotokos Evangelismos on the 25th of March at the place called `vounaria` in Koroni.
Saints Konstantine and Helen are celebrated in festivities at the 21st of May in Iamia koroni.
Maritime week 25th of June to 2nd of July. Event schedule also includes swimming race, basketball, soccer, fishing competition and music celebrations.
Finally every t 15th of August Koroni has a large festival for the celebration of Koimisi tis Theotokou.

Beaches
You can swim at zaga beach. It is a wonderful ,lively sandy beach.
Memi beach is also a beautiful beach with gold sand and crystal water.
Kalamaki beach, is one of the most beautiful and lively beaches of Koroni. Besides its thin sand and blue-green waters, many tourists are attracted by a rusty shipwreck dominating the seaside.
Other beautiful beaches of the town are : Peroulia, Kolonides, Gargarou and the beach under the castle.

HOW TO GET TO KORONI
From Athens one can get to Koroni, following the Athens-Korinthos –Tripolis national road and then following the Tripoli-Megalopoli-Kalamata route. When arriving in Kalamata, follow the signs to Koroni. The total route is 281 kilometers.
One can also get a flight to Kalamata international airport and then get to Koroni –which is a route of 35 kilometers- by car or bus.
