The house is located on the island of Kastelorizo, Dodecanese. It was originally built in the 1800s within the alleyways of the harbour with its back face looking towards the overbearing mountain above.
Like so many houses on the island it was left to deteriorate and the owners, both architects, decided in 2007 to restore the house, adding to it modern conveniences whilst retaining many of the original features. The design whilst modern in approach, relates to the elements of the island. As it is predominantly a holiday house, the finishes chosen were to reflect this – polished floors, benches and bathrooms- a simple sweep and the house is clean and ready to go.
The house comprises of two independent residences each two storeys and with their own separate entrance. There is a large courtyard accessed by the lower residence with an original `sterna` (water storage tank), wood fire stove and plenty of storage space. Residence 1 comprises of the ground floor, with open plan living-dining-kitchen areas and a wc, and of the first floor where two bedrooms are located each with a balcony, and a spacious colourful bathroom. The courtyard on the ground floor offers privacy to the user and has also an additional feature: the traditional and original external oven where one can enjoy tasteful cooked food!
Residence 2 is on the second floor and comprises of a double height space of approximately 7x7 meters, open plan living- dining-kitchen areas, and an impresive blue coloured bathroom. The timber loft which is hung from the inclined timber roof is a dominant feature where the bedroom is situated. Access to this area is by an unusual designed timber staircase. From the small southwest windows surrounding the loft one can have glimpses of the sea, while from the northeast one can see the mountain.
