The name comes from the ancient Omolion or Omoli, which was the northernmost fortified city of ancient Magnesia.
The city surrounds archaeological sites and residential complexes.
Omolion is mentioned in Orpheus`s `Argonautica`, where the Argonauts between 1600 BC and 1800 BC, leaving Iolkos (present-day Volos) met the Omolion with its many caves (there are many caves with stalactites and stalagmites) as well as in Strabo`s `Geographica`, according to Persian history.
Alexander the Great passed through the adjacent gorge with his army.
During ancient times (4th-3rd century BC), in Omolion, there was a pottery workshop and one of the most important Greek mints.
From time to time, ancient valuable finds have been found in Omolion such as gold crowns, gold coins, rings, ancient weapons, etc. Some of these are in the Archaeological Museum of Volos.-
