A house in a Byzantine walled-in city

The “rock” of Monemvasia juts out to sea from the eastern most
peninsula of the Peloponnese, like a finger pointing into the blue
Mediterranean waters.
This island connects with the mainland via a charming medieval
causeway.
This easily defendable rock was inhabited form the 6th century AD,
grew into an important trading centre and became prey to all
invaders. At its prime it housed an upper settlement (known today as
the “Goula”) where nobility and clergy, protected by a large military
garrison, reached over 20,000 in numbers. The lower city, alive to this
day, was the service area for “Goula”, teeming with traders,
craftsmen and taverns.
Access to this lower city was and is through a gate (the “Pili”)
leading to a central cobblestone walkway flanked by shops, bars, and
“tavernas”; nothing on wheels but the occasional wheel barrow
moving building materials and consumables.
Our Monemvasia house lies in the midst of this archaeological
paradise.

Our 165 sq.m three storey house, probably rebuilt during the second
Venetian occupation in the 1600s, has nurtured four generations of
our family.
It comprises an upper floor with a 45 sq.m double room and
bathroom; a 10 sq.m entrance vestibule, a 35sq.m middle room and
bathroom; a 25 s.q.m. mezzanine overlooking a 50 sq.m. ground floor
vault including a living/dining area and kitchen.
From the lower entrance one has access to the swimming area 100m
away through the “Portello”, an opening on the outer walls.

It would be of particular interest to people who like to live with a
sense of History; or just appreciate a wonderful atmosphere just to
sit and read in peace or paint or just walk and contemplate. Of
course, in August, the heart of summer, the houses comes to life,
bursting with vacation mood, open air cultural activities, brimming
with ouzo and sea urchins; but never obtrusive, never overcrowded.

One would not only acquire a house but a whole way of living!
