A few words about the village.
The village is about 50 km from Heraklion & 5 km from the Municipality of Moira with
developed residential & commercial activity.

According to the last census of 2011, 325 inhabitants live in the village. Their main
occupation is olive growing and viticulture.

HISTORY
Municipal District of the Municipality of Phaistos, in the foothills of Psiloritis and at an
altitude of 170 m. The name of the village is due to the fortress, which was called Castel
Nuovo and is located a short distance to the east of the village and is today called Psilo
Kasteli.

Castel Nuovo was built in 1206 by the Genoese pirate Enrico Pescatore, on the steep hill
and gave it the name nuovo. The same name was retained by the Venetians and is
mentioned in a document of distribution in 1212. The building was handed over to the
Scordilide rebels by the castellan Corrado De Milena, during the revolution of the two
Sivrites in -(Phone number)- . In the revolution of Saint Titus in 1364 the revolutionaries tried in vain
to understand.

The ancient city of Aina (2nd - 1st century BC) is also located in the area.

Castro Nuovo is mentioned in a contract of 1301 of the notary of Khandaka Benv. De
Brixano. It is also mentioned in a document of the Ducal Moat Archive of 1368, that Michael
Dulepti (Worker) inhabitant of Castro Nuovo was vindicated by the claim of Ioh. De Lago,
who demanded the third of the lime, which Michael Dulepti took out of the Camini he had
made in the garden, of the text in the manor of Rufa, belonging to Ioh. De Lago... It is also
mentioned in a contract of 1388 Kasteli Kainourgio.

From Kastrophylakas it is mentioned as Novo proprio (= the main Kastelli) with 644
inhabitants in 1583. In the case of those obliged to serve in the galleys (or caterga) as
oarsmen, 28 people are mentioned in Castel ditto. From the Basilica it is recorded as Castel
nuovo proprio in 1630.
