SEED (Society for Ecological Education and Development) was founded in November 2009 by five families from seven countries united by a shared vision to create an off-grid project in the rainforest of Costa Rica. They combined expertise in engineering, agronomy, law, education and permaculture to develop a 370-acre property in the Talamanca region with three river systems. Initially accessible only on foot, the land now hosts an eight-hectare integrated sustainable farm designed with biodiversity, sustainability, functionality and beauty in mind. Rainwater harvesting systems and protein-rich fodder banks provide food and water for chickens, sheep and ducks, while animal compost enriches the soil for hundreds of fruit trees. Construction materials like bamboo and timber were sourced locally to ensure low-impact development and thoughtful landscaping with flowering plants creates natural borders. Located 20 minutes from the beaches of Cahuita National Park, this project is a living example of regenerative design in one of Costa Rica-s most biodiverse regions.
