Maranhao State, on the banks of the Riacho Cachoeira, wedged inside the Parque Estadual do Mirador
(Mirador State Park), established by Lei Estadual n� 7.641/80 (State Law No. 7,641 / 80) dated 06/04 / 1980.
The park is located about 490 km from S�o. Luis / Maranh�o, between the rivers Itapecuru and
Alpercatas,in the Maranhense Amazon Heart. The park is a savannah area, with numerous plateaus,
trails, cliffs and marshes and wide variety of fauna and flora. Throughout its length are forests
Babassus, and tucum, buriti, maca�ba and other typical palm trees. It is also common to see in place
agouti, armadillo, Margay cats, wild boar, capybara, tortoise, and a diversity of birds like Juritis,
canaries, woodpeckers, Rufous-muds, thrushes and others. The area was chosen as a way to protect
the watershed of the Alto Itapecuru, one of the most important of the state, where the headwaters of
several springs of Itapecuru River, responsible for supplying twenty Maranh�o cities, including the
capital, S�o Lu�s. Today the park is managed by the Secretaria do Meio Ambiente do Estado do
Maranh�o (Department of Maranh�o State for the Environment), which has as executer the
COOPERMIRA � Cooperativa do Parque Mirador which has as its responsibilities the management,
environmental monitoring and control of the entire park, avoiding any kind of deforestation and
degradation of the area, including the prohibition of hunters and fishermen entries in the area, that is,
this area has all the characteristics and natural resources for companies that want to use it as a reserve
for obtaining carbon credits.
