Location : Munic�pio (County) of Mirador, State of Maranh�o, within the Parque Estadual do Mirador
Property Size : 7,241 ha (Aprox. 17,900 Acres)
Land fully preserved, located by the (creek) Riacho Cachoeira, within the Parque Estadual do Mirador,
created in 1980. The park is about 490 km (304 miles) far from S�o Luis/Maranh�o (the State Capital),
between the rivers Itapecuru and Alpercatas, Heart of Maranh�o Amazon. The park is an area composed
by cerrado, with a number of chapadas, ways, cliffs and marshes and with great variety of fauna and
flora. In its entire length there are babacu, tucum, buriti and macauba native forests and others typical
palms. It is also common to see in the place agoutis, armadillos, margay cats, collared peccaries,
capybaras, red-footed tortoises, besides a large diversity of birds as turtle-doves, saffron finches,
woodpeckers, ovenbirds, thrushes and others. The area was chosen as a way to protect the
hydrographic basin of High Itapecuru, one of the most important of the State, where are located the
sources of the several tributaries of Itapecuru River, that supply water to about twenty cities in the
Maranh�o State, including the capital, S�o Lu�s. Today, the Park is managed by the Secretaria do Meio
Ambiente do Estado do Maranh�o, that has as executive COOPERMIRA � Cooperativa do Parque do
Mirador with the responsibilities to manage, monitor and control the environment of the entire park,
preventing any kind of deforesting and degrading of the area, including the prohibition of admittance of
hunters and fishers, that is, this area is a good investment for carbon credit companies.
