The cottage is indeed somewhat remote. A bus passes by Familial and train stops even in Famalicão (albeit on the outskirts of the village) so this should be fine. Although I have my doubts as to the duration in which you`ll sit on the train. Certainly there are also taxis (all cream).
Famalicão is a small village with a restaurant (A repose = fox) where you can get both the afternoon and evening delicious daily specials. There is a mini Mercado (= small supermarket), a few steps from your house, where you can get everything from bread to laundry detergent.
There is also a bike shop, because the cycling tourism has in Portugal since a three-odd years a significant advance, but if you do rent bikes, I do not really know. You must also be in good shape to ride there, given the hilly nature of the area.
If you want to go to the beach, you have to have transport, because every village still is several kilometers from any beach. The nearest beach is walk in an hour.
There is also the possibility to rent a car in Portugal itself, people can certainly go by plane.
It also depends on whether they go for a beach holiday, or if they want to see a few things...
We would not personally go without a car. Even with our two kids and not by plane, we would rent a car, but we look like very much and always try as much as possible to incorporate into us.
